Known as a problem solver with a creative mind, Phillip’s 35 years of experience gives him a depth of insight that allows him to see solutions where others only see issues. He believes “no” is not an option and is willing to do what it takes to find a way. His focus is on building a team that pays attention to every detail and that values growing client relationships that go far beyond bricks and mortar. Away from the office, Phillip enjoys quiet days at home, beach trips, and occasional golf outings.
Corey McDonough, Chief Financial Officer
Corey joined Sela Building in 2005 and has over 29 years of experience in the construction industry. After serving his country honorably in the Army 82nd Airborne Division, Corey earned degrees in both Business and Accounting from Methodist University. In addition, Corey holds a general contractors license. While working towards his degrees, he started his career as an accounting and payroll clerk with a local construction company. During the next 11 years he was appointed Controller, CFO and then Executive Vice President, overseeing operations and production of a $35 million company doing business in NC, FL and Puerto Rico. Corey values his family, enjoys the beach and relaxing rounds of golf.
David Elliott, Vice President of Production
David takes the stress out of the building process through a combination of his experience, relational approach and “can-do” attitude. Since joining the Sela team in 2008, David has earned his NC General Contractors license and a real estate broker’s license. He also has five years of industrial project management experience and has Lead Safety Certification. He is dedicated to building and training a team in the field that thrives on understanding every detail to ensure precision and quality. He is motivated to identify solutions, deliver excellence, and serve clients well by earning their trust. He enjoys his family and getting in a round of 18 holes.
Matthew Simpson, Estimator
Matthew has “boots on the ground” experience in every aspect of the building process with over 20 years in the construction industry. His background in supervision and project management form a strong foundation for his current position of leading the Estimation Team. He holds a NC General Contractors license and as a former business owner he knows what it takes to get the job done with efficiency and excellence. In addition to work, Matthew earned an associate’s degree in Theology and is active in church and the community. He loves the outdoors, backpacking and spending time with his family.
Chad Hylland, Project Manager
Chad is guided by one, driving principle -- integrity. As a licensed general contractor with over 23 years of construction experience, it is what allows him to build strong partnerships with clients and to grow relationships with them that go beyond the job site. Chad’s goal is to serve the client’s interests as if it were his own so they have confidence that their best plans will become their ultimate reality. When he’s not on the job, he enjoys spending time with his family and outdoor activities.
Rebecca Tharpe, Accounts Payable
Rebecca is a problem-solver who loves creativity, to improve processes and to execute projects. As one of eleven children of a construction worker, she was raised to value hard work. Rebecca has gained a broad understanding of the construction industry. During her eight years with Sela Building, she’s moved from Administrative Assistant to Project Coordinator/Office Manager and is now responsible for Accounts Payable. She also works closely with the marketing team. She’s received OSHA and Procore training and earned a medical related degree from Surry Community College. Most weekends, you can find her spending time with her family, on a ball field, antiquing, or enjoying a good book.
Robin Hiatt, Contracts Administrator
Robin possesses a quick mind for details that has been sharpened over seven years of experience in the construction industry. She joined Sela Building after working with her family’s business, bringing with her a strong appreciation of the value of hard work, dedication and passion. She enjoys slow days with family, friends and toes in the sand.
William Ratley, Field Construction Coordinator
William graduated from Appalachian State University with a Bachelor of Science degree in International and Comparative Politics. Before attending ASU, he played two years of college football as an offensive lineman at Campbell University. Growing up around the construction industry as Phillip’s son, William started at Sela Building upon graduation and has spent the last three years learning the construction business. He is currently working in estimation and is helping to lead the Procore implementation team. Outside of work, William enjoys hiking/backpacking trips, flying and anything to do with nature.
Heath Powell, Project Manager
Heath Powell joined Sela Building in 2015 and is a graduate of East Carolina University with a Bachelor of Science degree in Construction Management. Heath is a Project Manager for retail restaurant and convenience store new builds and remodels. He began his career in 2004 handling residential construction projects and transitioned to commercial construction management in 2007. Heath developed a relationship with Sela Building’s leadership while a Construction Manager for The Pantry Inc. in 2010. His commitment to professionalism and fairness makes him a perfect fit for the Sela team. Heath enjoys spending time with his wife and two children, completing automotive/home improvement projects, and competitive shooting.
Heather Renegar, Project Coordinator
Heather is a team-first player who is willing to serve and make things happen in order to get the job done. She spent 14 years in the medical field and began working with Sela in December of 2017. After eight months, her upbeat attitude and attention to detail allowed her to advance into her current role. She is now pursuing certification in Procore. Her interests include spending time with her husband and two boys, crochet and beach trips.
Kara Waters Ratley, Secretary/Treasurer
Kara has operated on the periphery of the construction industry since she married Phillip in 1991, after the empty nest became reality, she decided to formally enter the workforce alongside Phillip at Sela Building Corporation where she serves as Corporate Secretary/Treasurer. In 2006, Kara & Phillip started Sela Real Estate Services, LLC which Kara has been Broker In Charge since 2010. In her spare time, she loves spending time with family and enjoying sand and surf.
Stephanie Klatt, Administrative Assistant
Stephanie joined the Sela Building Corporation in spring of 2019 as our Administrative Assistant. She brings over 20 plus years of hospitality to Sela Building, along with exceptional customer relations experience and a few years in the construction industry. Stephanie grew up in Asheville, NC and planted roots in Jonesville around 2010. She has acquired a Business Administration degree and hopes to hone this knowledge and add to it, as she grows within our company. Stephanie is dedicated to her passion for business and customer excellence and is delighted to be a part of our office team. In her remaining spare time, Stephanie can be found outside in the garden or enjoying the lake. She also finds enjoyment hiking, backpacking or camping with her children, husband and two German shepherd fur babies when time allows.
